SUPPORT PROFESSOR & ACTIVIST, MANOLO CALLAHAN!!!

May 11, 2008

Peace be with you

The nation’s key eugenic organizations funded by the Rockefeller, Harriman and Carnegie families included the American Eugenics Society (AES), and its sister organization, the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) established in 1947, the Cold Springs Harbor Experimental Station for the Study of Evolution, the Eugenic Record Office, and the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. They promoted eugenic counseling, selective mating and artificial insemination as “positive” means of breeding superior human stock and compulsory sterilization and euthanasia as forms of “negative” eugenics to weed out “inferior” or “unfit” human stock. A Mau-Mau gang, (note the home-made rifle held by the man on the far right)

I received the following e-mail and thought I should pass it on. Rollin Richmond, the president of HSU has a history of destroying ethnic studies departments every where he goes. Richmond, an apartheidist run out of Kenya by the Mau Mau rebellion, has a doctorate of “genetics” (AKA eugenics) from the Rockefeller University (formally the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research). Manolo is a selfless friend to many of us in Humboldt County. I too agree that politics or more precisely Manolo’s disagreement with Richmond’s political agenda is the reason this excellent professor now finds his tenure in jeopardy. Please read:

Please show up on Monday at the HSU Library for our friend and comrade, Manolo.

SUPPORT PROFESSOR & ACTIVIST, MANOLO CALLAHAN!!!

Dr. Manuel “Manolo” Callahan is being threatened with denial of reappointment to a sixth year in the Ethnic Studies program at HSU. If denied reappointment to a sixth year, he will not have the opportunity to apply for tenure and will no longer have the opportunity to teach at HSU. This will affect him professionally wherever he may go in the future.

This threat is immensely unfair and shows that Manolo’s work is undervalued by the university. Furthermore, a denial of his sixth year and of tenure would be nothing less than a political attack.

Manolo is revered by his students, progressive community members, and many radical colleagues, as he goes well beyond fulfilling his responsibilities as professor.

We believe that due to his political work, inherent in the engaging, creative and challenging ways he teaches Ethnic Studies, Manolo is being racially and politically profiled. Manolo consistently provides support, insight, and empowerment to students of color and other marginalized community. He is a source of significant resources and inspiration, playing an important role as mentor, strategist, and comrade. He is active and inspiring both on campus and in the larger community, facilitating seminars and events for a wide range of groups to learn, connect, share, and actualize our collective strengths.

His political and community engagement on and off campus transcend “classroom teaching” reinforcing local, state, national, and transnational struggles for dignity. While HSU espouses “community service” Manolo’s community activities – because they at times critique the role of HSU in perpetuating physical as well as symbolic violence - has been unjustly treated by some of his colleagues and administrators at HSU as a threat. Because of this, the HSU administration tries to undermine Manolo’s authority as a scholar on race.

We will not remain silent about this bureaucratic attack that threatens Manolo’s future and the critical work he does in our communities.

The attack on Manolo has been building for five years as he has been the target of his colleagues’ reactionary politics.

To express our support for Manolo, on Monday, May 12th, we will submit our formal letter of recommendation to Bob Snyder, Provost of Academic Affairs, who holds the ultimate decision making power in the reappointment process. This letter will be the voice of many. It will evaluate Manolo’s performance as teacher, scholar, and community member and clearly show our support for his 6th year and for his tenure.

This letter is only as powerful as the hands who sign and deliver it. We ask you to join us in the delivery of this recommendation.

This step is critical. We do not trust Bob Snyder and the committees below him to act in our best interests while making this decision. Indeed, we believe the decision-making bodies of the university are waging a concerted and dishonest effort to attack Manolo’s tenure track position and career. We want to amplify our desire to ensure his presence at HSU long after many of us leave, so that he is available to generations of future students. Manuel Callahan deserves nothing less than being granted tenure next year and we want to see that he is reappointed to a sixth year in the Ethnic Studies Program.

In the spirit of supporting Ethnic Studies, a discipline that was born in student struggle, we urge you to demonstrate your support for Manolo, Professor Manuel Callahan, who is committed to challenging injustice in our communities.

Show up Monday May 12 at 10am outside HSU library.

There you can sign a letter written by students and community members that evaluates his contributions and personally deliver it.

Humboldt County One Step Closer to Genociding Your Love Ones

Peace be with you

This was the tragic fulfillment of a program of intolerance and arrogance. Vengeance is not our goal, nor do we seek merely a just retribution. We ask this court to affirm by international penal action, man’s right to live in peace and dignity, regardless of his race or creed. The case we present is a plea of humanity to law.

We shall establish beyond the realm of doubt, facts which before the dark decade of the Third Reich, would have seemed incredible. The record will show that the slaughter committed by these defendants was dictated not by military necessity, but by the supreme perversion of thought — the Nazi theory of the master race.

We shall show that these deeds of men in uniform, were the methodical execution of long range planning to destroy ethnic, national, political, and religious groups which stood condemned in the Nazi mind. Genocide — the extermination of whole categories of human beings, was the foremost instrument of the Nazi doctrine.

Sir Hartley Shawcross, the British prosecutor at the International Trials, pointed out that the right of humanitarian intervention on behalf of the rights of man, trampled upon by a state in a manner shocking the sense of mankind, has long been considered to form part of the Law of Nations.

German law professors too, declared this in their writings. The jurisdictional power of every state extends to the punishment of offenses against the Law of Nations, “by whomsoever and wheresoever committed.” It is, therefore, wholly fitting for this court to hear these charges of international crime and to adjudge them in the name of civilization.

Excerpt from Ben Ferencz’s, prosecutor of the Nasiz Einsatzgruppen (mobile killing units) trials in which all Nazi suspects were found guilty, opening statement.

What a day the Mental Health Policing Machine had Tuesday at the Humboldt county board of Supes meeting. First they “proclaimed” May “mental health month” and gave this back-patting, propagandized award to Karolyn Stein, “RN,” Branch Director of the Mental Health “branch” of Health and Human Services:This propaganda “proclamation” is better viewed at the HCBS web site. I will let this self-aggrandizing, deceitful, bullshit speak for itself (at least until I can find enough time to debunking the numerous bald-face lies it “proclaims”).

Next they proclaimed it “nurses week.” Which is great, but it was quickly segued into “psychiatric nurses week.” Part of the “aren’t nurses great proclamation” said:

“Whereas, Psychiatric nurses are on the front line in the DHHS Psychiatric Emergency Services unit and see an average of 1500 people every year. About 500 people are cared for in Sempervirens every year and one psychiatric nurse in the jail visits an average of 1200 inmates annually”

Let’s see an average of 1500 equals an average of 1200 plus about 500? I never did get Crandall’s neo-math.

This generic “whereas” bullshit has gone too far. You can pick any bullshit you want to propagandize, make up a bunch of “facts,” throw in one or two truths here and there, and then proclaim it national bullshit month. Throw in a few on-the-clock attendees and everybody is all feel-goody while the paradigm shift is applied.

The finial coup de grace can when the board of Supes gave Phillip Crandall two “psychiatric nurses” to staff his mobile drugging unit (MDU). The goons I spoke of are now ready to start prowling our county streets looking for people they can “5150″ on demand.

Once only doctors were allowed to give people drugs, but with the lack of support for forcing drugs on innocent people new laws made it possible for non-doctors to dope unsuspecting poor people.

It goes something like this: The busyness owner doesn’t think you belong in “their” town, they call the MDU, and a couple of cops hold you down while a certified “psychiatric nurse” shoots a hypodermic of Haldol in your ass. You go to court and find out they want to dope you for life. You argue convincingly that you are not crazy, nor have you ever been crazy. But, yes there is always a but, but the judge believes the “psychiatric nurse’s” explanation that the meds, which take several weeks to work, preformed a miracle on your ass, and you should be forced on them indefinitely.

The MDU is here, the goons are hired, and alls their waiting on is an excuse.

Care not cash AKA fucking the poor

Peace be with you and happy Beltane

Today’s May day and that means Beltane celebrations and labor struggles. The longshoremen are planning on shutting down every port in California today in their “No Peace, No Work Holiday” to oppose US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan. Rock-on brothers and sisters I support you 100% on this one.

On a sadder note the SF Chronicle today praised Gruesome Newsom’s theft of San Francisco’s poorest resident’s pennies as a “success.” In May of 2004 Newsom reduced homeless General Relief benefits from as much as $410 a month to $59 a month. Newsom then “remov[ed] SRO hotels (where poor people live) from the open market and placing homeless people in them to great media fanfare . . . charg[ed] the homeless for electricity when they sleep on a mat on a shelter floor under the auspices of Care Not Cash, and . . . set aside services for homeless people who make contact with the mayor’s outreach workers rather than any of the dozens of other outreach workers who are out in the streets every single day,” as reported in this San Francisco Bay Guardian article. This claim of success is based on questionable homeless counting practices like not allowing counters in city parks. While the visible homeless are reduced in downtown San Francisco outlying areas like the Mission District are “overflowing with homeless.” Newsom and his bean counters claim that the shift from homeless services to mental health drugs is working, but it is based on leaving homeless precariously housed with less then $2 a day to live on. Affordable housing is housing that costs no more then 33% of one’s income, not 85% from those least able to pay it.

I would be irresponsible not to mention that Humboldt County does the same screwing of General Relief recipients every winter, except in SF one is guaranteed to get housing and in Humboldt it’s more likely a camping ticket.
